Not by the window, not next to the radiator, not on a flimsy shelf — 9 factors that decide the success of your first tank.

Placement decides 50 % of an aquarium's success. The wrong spot means endless algae, temperature swings, noise, or physical disaster (floor collapsed, neighbour flooded).

1. Floor strength and the stand

A 100 L tank weighs 130–150 kg with stand and water. 200 L — 280–320 kg. That's the load on 1 m² of floor. Old solid floors or 2nd–3rd story masonry hold. Modern wood subfloors might NOT hold 200+ L without reinforcement.

2. Away from windows

Direct sun 1–2 hours/day = algae disaster in 2 weeks. Goal: indirect lighting, with the tank's own light as the main source.

3. Away from radiators and AC

Sharp temperature swings stress fish. Radiator overheats, AC chills. Keep at least 1 m from any heat/cold source.

4. Access to power and water

GFCI outlet nearby. Bathroom/kitchen within 5–10 m — you'll carry buckets for water changes weekly.

5. Level and stable surface

The tank must sit perfectly level (check with a spirit level). Tilt > 5 mm = uneven pressure on the glass = seam failure risk. The stand must be rigid.

6. Service access

At least 30 cm of free space above for the lid and equipment. 10–15 cm on each side for hand access. 5–10 cm behind for cables and hoses.

7. Noise level

Filter and pumps = constant 30–40 dB hum. Annoying in a bedroom, normal in living/hall. Bedroom-only options: silent models (Eheim ePro, Aquael Versamax).

8. Protection from kids and pets

Cat dips paws → fish stressed. Dog wags tail → can break glass. Toddler drops toys → contaminants in water. Tall stand or protective barrier helps.

9. Living room or private room?

Living room: pride, can show off. Cons: bright TV, guests, noise stress fish. Bedroom: quiet, calm fish, but filter noise bothers you. Office/hallway = compromise.

An aquarium is furniture in one spot for 5–10 years. Moving it with water and fish means 3 days of stress and a glass-shattering risk. Choose the spot ONCE.

FAQ

Can I put the tank on the floor?
Technically — yes, but practically NO: kids/cats, hard to maintain, water changes mean kneeling. Minimum 70–80 cm height on a stand.
What if my only option is a sunny window?
Use heavy black-out curtains for 80 %+ of the day, set the tank perpendicular to the window (not facing it), and expect algae issues — plan for heavier maintenance.
