Aquascaping basics: composition, styles, mistakes

From Amano and Iwagumi to the rule of thirds and focal points. How to design a tank you actually want to look at.

Aquascaping is the art of arranging plants, stones, and driftwood underwater so the result reads as a small natural landscape. Here we cover three classic styles and the composition rules that underpin any successful tank.

Three foundational styles

Nature Aquarium (Takashi Amano)

The naturalistic style: forest, mountain, or stream corners reimagined under water. Iwagumi stones or driftwood dominate, lush plants of varying height fill the volume, depth is created through perspective. The most popular style worldwide — thanks to its inventor, Japanese photographer Takashi Amano.

Iwagumi (stones only)

Minimalism: 3, 5, or 7 stones (always an odd number) plus carpeting plants — glossostigma, HC Cuba, dwarf hairgrass. No driftwood, no large plants. Stones come in three sizes: main, secondary, accent. The hardest beginner style because there's nowhere to hide mistakes.

Dutch style

An underwater garden — no hardscape (no stones or wood). Just plants arranged in tidy 'streets' of different colour and height. Demands precise knowledge of growth rates and a pronounced red-green palette. Dutch style is a technique, not a landscape.

Composition rules

Rule of thirds

Mentally split the tank into 9 equal parts (3 × 3). Place main objects on the intersections — that's where the viewer's eye naturally lands. Never in the dead centre.

Golden ratio (1:1.618)

Split the bottom of the tank into 38 % / 62 % proportions. Place the main stone or focal plant at the division. It's the proportion the human eye has internalised over millennia of looking at nature.

Focal point

Every aquarium needs ONE main focal point where the eye lands. It can be a large stone, an expressive root, or a striking plant. Multiple focal points cause the eye to wander and the composition falls apart.

Negative space

Don't fill every cubic inch with plants and decor. Empty stretches of water and sandy paths between groups give the scene depth and 'breathing' room. Experienced scapers leave 30–40 % of the floor empty.

Perspective and depth

Foreground — carpeting plants (HC, glossostigma), 2–4 cm. Midground — medium-height shrubs (anubias, cryptocoryne), 5–15 cm. Background — tall plants (vallisneria, ludwigia, rotala), 20 cm and up. This creates an illusion of depth even in a 30 cm deep tank.

Hardscape: stones and wood

Choosing stones

• Seiryu — grey-blue with veins; raises kH, use with caution in soft water. • Dragon stone (Ohko) — weathered, porous, full of crevices; pH-neutral. • Lava — light, porous, great for hiding filter intakes; neutral. • Sandstone — warm tones, sandy texture; neutral.

Choosing wood

• Mopani — dense, sinks immediately, dark. Leaches tannins (water turns yellow for 2–4 weeks). • Driftwood (mangrove) — light, floats for the first two weeks, needs soaking. • Spider wood (azalea) — graceful, branched. Ideal for focal accents. • Cholla — porous cactus 'tubes', perfect for nano tanks and shrimp setups.

Rule of odd numbers

Hardscape reads as natural when the count is odd: 1, 3, 5, 7 stones or pieces of wood. Even counts produce visual symmetry that nature rarely shows.

Plant placement

Texture contrast

Don't plant two species with similar leaf shape next to each other — the eye merges them. Alternate large-leaved (anubias, echinodorus) with fine-leaved (rotala, ludwigia), grassy (vallisneria) with ferny (microsorum).

Colour contrast

In a Nature Aquarium 80–90 % of the plants should be green and only 10–20 % red/yellow/burgundy. That's enough for visual accent. Too much red looks like a cake.

Groups, not singletons

Plant stem plants in groups of 5–10 stems per 'street'. A single stem surrounded by other species disappears. Anubias or echinodorus — 1 to 3 specimens, no more, otherwise the scene stalls.

Colour and light

Dark substrate makes greens more saturated and reds more vivid. Light substrate washes colours out. Light spectrum 6500–7500 K is optimal for most plants and pleasant to the human eye.

Common mistakes

• Centre symmetry — looks dead. Shift the accents off-centre. • Stones all the same size — you need three sizes: main, secondary, accent. • Too many plant species (more than 8–10) — the scene looks like a stamp collection. • Tall plants along the entire back wall — they shut the tank off. Tall only at the back, not the sides too. • Pet-store 'decorations' (bridge, castle, skull) — break the naturalism.

Maintaining the scene

An aquascape isn't a one-time install. Stems need trimming every two weeks to maintain 'domes' and 'lawns'. Anubias — remove aging leaves so they don't shade newer growth. Stones and wood — wipe weekly with a soft brush to clear algae.

The best scenes hold their look for 1–2 years, then need a partial rebuild — stems outgrow the layout, mosses smother hardscape, perspective is lost.

Aquascaping isn't 'planting plants' — it's scenography. Idea first, then hardscape, then plants. Never the reverse.

FAQ

Which style is best to start with?
Nature Aquarium. Iwagumi looks simple (just stones and grass), but minimalism is the most unforgiving — every misstep shows. Dutch demands knowledge of dozens of plant species. The naturalistic style is more flexible and forgives more.
How many plants do I need for a 100 L tank?
Starter set: 5–6 bunches of stem plants for the background (30–50 stems total), 2–3 mid-sized shrubs, 4–5 pots of carpeting plants. Within 2–3 months they fill in and the tank looks magazine-ready. Dense planting from the start is the best algae prevention.
