Description
The Scarlet Badis (Dario dario) is one of the smallest and most brilliantly colored perciform fishes on Earth, reaching just 1.5–2 cm. Dominant males glow like living rubies with seven fiery crimson bars alternating with iridescent sky-blue stripes and metallic fin margins, hovering gracefully through moss and stem plants like a miniature reef hawkfish.
Care
A single male or trio (1 male, 2 females) thrives in a densely planted 20-liter nano tank (20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–12). Males establish tiny territories around driftwood or rock crevices; housing multiple males requires 40–50 L+ with broken lines of sight. Keep flow gentle and avoid fast, greedy tankmates that outcompete them at feeding time.
Feeding
Obligate micro-carnivore: rarely accepts dry flakes or pellets! Provide live or frozen micro-crustaceans and worms daily—baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), copepods, cyclops, daphnia, microworms, and Grindal worms. In established planted tanks, they also hunt resident seed shrimp (ostracods) and detritus worms.
Breeding
Males court silver-gray females into dense moss patches within their territory. Eggs hatch in 48–72 hours; tiny fry require microscopic infusoria and paramecia for the first week before graduating to microworms and newly hatched brine shrimp.

FAQ
- Why won't my Scarlet Badis eat dry pellets or flakes?
- Dario dario is an instinctive micro-predator triggered by prey movement. Target-feed live baby brine shrimp, microworms, or thawed cyclops with a pipette.
- Is the Scarlet Badis safe with Cherry Shrimp?
- Adults are completely safe since Dario dario is only 2 cm long, but it will actively hunt newborn shrimplets hiding in the moss.
