Description
The Golden Mbuna or Auratus Cichlid (Melanochromis auratus) is famous across the aquarium hobby for two things: fierce territoriality and a dramatic color inversion in mature males. While juveniles and adult females gleam bright golden-yellow with two black-and-white horizontal stripes, dominant males completely reverse their palette—turning dark espresso-black with glowing electric-blue/silver and gold horizontal bands.
Care
Due to its relentless territorial temperament, house Auratus in a 200L+ aquarium (at least 120 cm long, pH 7.8–8.5, GH 10–22, 24–28 °C) with a strict harem ratio of 1 male to 4–5 females alongside robust Mbuna tankmates. Build tall rockwork piles and run heavy-duty canister filtration at 10x turnover/hour (see our Cichlid Overstocking & Aggression Guide).
Feeding
Herbivorous Aufwuchs grazer: feed a predominantly plant-based diet of spirulina flakes, algae wafers, vegetarian cichlid pellets, and blanched romaine lettuce or zucchini to prevent Malawi Bloat.
Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooder incubating 20–35 eggs for ~21 days. Provide narrow rock crevices so brooding females can rest out of sight of the hyper-active dominant male.
Compatibility
- Yellow Lab Cichlid
Labidochromis caeruleus

FAQ
- Why did my bright yellow Auratus cichlid turn black?
- That means it is a maturing dominant male! Male Melanochromis auratus undergo a complete color inversion from golden-yellow to dark black with silver-blue stripes.
- Can I keep two male Auratus cichlids in the same tank?
- In tanks under 350–400 liters, two males will fight to the death. Always keep a single male with 4–5 females.
